4. Smart Card Interface driver use
-----------------------------------

   4.1. Driver installation

WARNING, the reader power cable must not be connected to the
keyboard port when the computer is running, this action may
   damage your machine!
Power off the PC before any operation on that connector!

      4.1.1. Installation

Via a windows explorer, locate the files in the
	 "NT4" directory,
Right click on file named GTWinSNT.inf,
Select the "Install" option in the menu.
Modify the boot ini file (see note ** on user note section 5)
in order to avoid a serial mouse automatic detection in COM port.
         Then Power off your computer.
Plug your smart card reader in COM port 1 (default).
[Note: If you want to use another COM port than COM1, or add
other readers of the same type, please go to
section 4.4 "Change COM port / Add more readers"]
Remove any floppy disk and restart your system.

      4.1.2. Check your installation

	 After the restart,
	 Open the Control Panel,
         Choose the "Devices" applet,

         Optionnally you can:
Insert a smart card in the reader (the chip should be on
the same side as the Gemplus Logo on the reader),
The flashing device LED goes solid: this means that you
have full connection with the Smart Card Resource Manager.

5 - User notes (known deviations)
---------------------------------

* The Smart Card Resource Manager is not Plug and Play on Windows NT4.
This is a system limitation. You *must reboot* your system after a
reader installation to be able to use it.

* When going to suspend mode, Windows unloads most device drivers.
Even though device drivers are reloaded on resume, the Microsoft
Smart Card Resource Manager does not update its references to these
  devices.
Note that you might also get the message:
"Reader monitor '' received uncaught error code. The
device does not recognize the command."
We recommend that you configure your computer so that it cannot go
to suspend mode and that you shut it down instead of using the
  suspend mode.

* This driver does not support Plug and Play requests nor power
management. This is a limitation of Windows NT4 and Microsoft's
  Smart Card Resource Manager.

** When you start Windows NT, NTDETECT searches for then pointing device
(usually a mouse). In the course of this process, data is sent to the
serial (COM) ports. If a serial mouse is detected, Windows NT disables
the port so a device driver for the mouse can be loaded instead.
If a device is not detected, Windows NT disables the port. A disabled
COM port does not display any information in Control Panel Ports.
Then no Smart card reader can be installed.

To disable the detection of devices on COM ports in Windows NT :
    1. Make a backup copy of the Boot.ini file.
    2. Remove the hidden, system, and read-only attributes from the
       Boot.ini file.
    3. Using a text editor (such as Notepad) open the Boot.ini file.
    4. Add the /NoSerialMice option to the end of each entry in the
       [operating systems] section of Boot.ini.
See the example below for more information.
    5. Save Boot.ini and quit Notepad.
    6. Restore the hidden, system, and read-only attributes to the
       Boot.ini file.
    7. Shutdown and restart Windows NT.

The following is a sample of the Boot.ini file:
     [boot loader]
     timeout=3
     default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT35

     [operating systems]
     multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT35="Windows NT Workstation
        Version 3.51" /NoSerialMice

     multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT35="Windows NT Workstation
        Version 3.51 [VGA mode]" /basevideo /sos /NoSerialMice

  NoSerialMice Syntax
/NoSerialMice - Disables the detection of serial mice on
                           all COM ports.

/NoSerialMice:COMx - Disables the detection of serial mice on
COM x, where x is the number of the port.

/NoSerialMice:COMx,y,z - Disables the detection of serial mice on
                           COM x, y and z.

* If two serial readers are installed on a PCMCIA/Serial adapter and
on a COM port, it is possible "pcmcia" service started after GTWinSNT
service, then only the serial reader installed on COM port is
operational. To bypass this problem, you have to
  1. stopped the "Smart Card Ressource Manager" and the "GTWinSNT"
     service (in this order).
  2. started the "GTWinSNT" and the "Smart Card Ressource Manager"
     service (in this order).

6. Troubleshooting
-------------------
If the previously described procedure didn't succeed in installing or
updating the driver, please

1- Verify that the reader cable is connected to a usable computer
   COM port

2- Verify that the power cable is connected to the keyboard port.

3- Open the Device Manager,
click on the "Smart card readers" group and
check the state of the Gemplus Serial Smart Card Reader 0.
If a cross appears, select the reader,
click on property in the menu and
check the line "de-activate in this material profile" and
   contact the support.
